「縁」というテーマで召喚された12作品は、一定敷地において技術や知恵を統合するという建築の性格を踏まえながら、いずれもその領域を拡張し、周縁の地域や人々、経済、文化や歴史へと触手を伸ばし、関係性を新しく構築する実践である。日本館の展示においては、建築の骨格である壁柱が本展示の3つのテーマ「人の縁」「モノの縁」「地域の縁」の軸を成し、そこから梁空間が広がるごとく、12作品が壁柱周縁へと配される。 個々の作品により提示される「縁」に加え、作品が互いにその輪郭を重ね、関係付けられることで新たな「縁」が生まれる。一方、日本館の魅力のひとつでもある外構を含めたピロティ空間では、高低差を生かしたアプローチ、種々の樹木や植栽、卍配置の壁柱などによる既存の関係を読み解き、新たに移ろう光や緑の情景を映し出すスクリーンと、人びとの居場所となるしつらえを挿入することで、訪れる人々のふるまいを紡ぐ「縁」を体感する場とした。

Based on the architectural aspect of fusing technique and knowledge on a specific site, the 12 works, which share the common theme of en, expand the space, reaching out toward surrounding areas and people, economies, culture, and history, and functioning as practical means of building new relationship. In this exhibition in the Japan Pavilion, the wall pillars, the framework of building, serve as axes for the three main themes: the en of people, the en of things, and en of locality. Extending out like beams, the 12 works are arranged around these pillars.
In addition to the en displayed in each individual work, the contours of the works overlap, creating new en by connecting with each other. At the same time, in the pilot space that encompasses the exterior, one of the pavilion’s most attractive features, the seats and screens, which display changing scenes of natural light and greenery, are carefully positioned according to an interpretation of the existing relationship between the approach, which makes the most of the natural terrain, various kinds of trees, and the fylfot form of the wall pillars. The space functions as a venue to connect people’s behaviors and allow them to experience en.
